Why does my laptop automatically shut down/shut off when i try to open programs that are 'heavy

it shuts off when i scan it with antivirus or open media player plus other programs, etc...i use a 512 for RAM... help help help?!?!?! thanks!

it is a safety feature to prevent damage. if u use win xp , vista or ubuntu upgrade your ram to at least 1gb. since u've 512 just buy a 1gb module.

It *is* possible that the above poster is right in that the machine may be overheating and doing a thermal shutdown. The other possibility is that the memory currently in the computer is defective and upon trying to access the corrupt memory the machine blue screens. The default settings for most versions of Windows currently in use cause the machine to reboot and/or shut down when a blue screen condition occurs.
