When I atach a word document (39k) and email it, the recipient receives a text file (1k) and cannot scan it for antivirus. Why does this happen?

Does the file name end with ".doc". If it doesn't, then Windows may not recognize it as a Word file, and assume it is text. Check the filename. If the extension isn't ".doc", then rename it and make sure the file ends in ".doc".

If that doesn't work, then maybe the file is corrupted, in which case ask your friend to verify and resend the file.
